Unfortunately, I discovered it only recently-The History Channel on television. Late in the evening before going to bed, I enjoy watching an hour or so of the programs on the channel. I often think of how much better my grades would have been had I been able to have the materials in my history books presented via THC!

਍ഀ The History Channel is not the only reason for my renaissance in history, however. Much as I hate to admit, the mirror reminds me daily why history means more to me now-I’m almost half a century old! Regardless of the reason, history has become a fascinating subject to me because of the valuable lessons we can learn by studying the past.

The following excerpts are from some of those prophets. In light of recent events in the United States, I find these messages to Israel curiously relevant and applicable to us. Sadly, we Americans may be as disinterested in the message as the Jews to whom they were given many centuries ago.

This called for reverence from them, and they greatly revered me and stood in awe of my name. They passed on to the people all the truth they received from me. They did not lie or cheat; they walked with me, living good and righteous lives, and they turned many from lives of sin. The priests' lips should guard knowledge, and people should go to them for instruction, for the priests are the messengers of the LORD Almighty. But not you! You have left God's paths. Your 'guidance' has caused many to stumble into sin. You have corrupted the covenant I made with the Levites (priests)," says the LORD Almighty. "So I have made you despised and humiliated in the eyes of all the people. For you have not obeyed me but have shown partiality in your interpretation of the law." (Taken from Malachi 2:1-9 NLT)

਍ഀ As we search for people to blame for the unenviable condition our nation is in, it is apparent that the religious and political leaders should take a significant share of the responsibility. Certainly Malachi’s words… ‘despised and humiliated in the eyes of all the people’…describe how many Americans feel toward the clergy and political leaders in our country. But!
